What’s the Difference Between Dip, Acrylic, Hard Gel & Gel Polish?

Let’s clear up the confusion so you know what’s really on your nails—and what should be.

If you’ve ever sat in a nail chair and felt overwhelmed by the choices, you’re not alone. Dip? Acrylic? Hard gel? Gel polish? They all promise long wear and pretty nails—but they’re not created equal, and they don’t all play nice with your natural nail health.

1. Gel Polish (like Shellac, OPI GelColor)

This is your go-to if you want natural nails with a little more staying power.

  • What it is: A long-lasting polish cured under LED or UV light.

  • Lasts: 10–14 days, depending on your lifestyle.

  • Removal: Soaks off easily.

  • Best for: Clients who want a natural nail look, minimal damage, and lower commitment.

👉 Pro tip: Add a dry manicure and cuticle oil daily, and you’ll easily stretch your wear time.

2. Dip Nails

Dip might be trending, but it comes with baggage.

  • What it is: Colored acrylic powder layered with glue-like resin and activated to harden.

  • Lasts: 2–3 weeks.

  • Removal: Must be soaked off, often with aggressive buffing.

  • Best for: People who want thicker nails without the sculpting of acrylics.

💬 Real talk: Dip can be harsh on the natural nail if done incorrectly or too frequently. The removal process and layers of resin can leave nails thin and sensitive.

3. Acrylic Nails

A salon classic—but not always the best option for long-term nail health.

  • What it is: A combination of liquid monomer and powder polymer that hardens when exposed to air. Usually used with tips or sculpted for length.

  • Lasts: 2–3 weeks with fills.

  • Removal: Requires soaking and filing.

  • Best for: Clients looking for durable, long nails or nail art.

⚠️ We don’t offer acrylics at Derma Glow—our focus is on maintaining strong, healthy natural nails, and acrylics don’t align with that.

4. Hard Gel

Think of it as the “luxury SUV” of nail enhancements—structured, strong, but a little more flexible.

  • What it is: A gel product that cures under LED/UV light and is used to build structure, add strength, or extend nails.

  • Lasts: 3+ weeks with proper maintenance.

  • Removal: Must be filed off—not soak-off.

  • Best for: Clients with weak or thin nails who want strength without the harshness of acrylic or dip.

💡 At Derma Glow, we love hard gel when clients need reinforcement but want to avoid damage. When applied properly, it grows out beautifully with the natural nail.

So... Which One Should You Choose?

It comes down to your lifestyle, your nail goals, and how committed you are to aftercare. Not all nails need to be “enhanced”—sometimes a good gel manicure with a proper dry manicure and daily oil is all you need.

If you’re not sure what’s best, we’ll walk you through it during your service. You’ll never feel rushed or pressured here. Your nails, your choice—we’re just here to make sure they stay healthy and beautiful no matter what.
