Skin in Your 40s: What Really Works (and What’s Just Hype)
A no-nonsense guide for women who are over the fluff and ready for results.
Now that we're 40, we really see my (our) skin differently. It’s not about just chasing being flawless—it’s about keeping things strong, healthy, and consistent. We've learned that less is more, and that the right treatments and products make all the difference.
Let’s call it like it is. By the time we hit 40, we’re not here to waste time or money. We’ve tried the serums, followed the trends, and maybe bought a few things we now regret. At this stage, we want skin that feels good, looks healthy, and holds up with or without makeup. And we want the truth.
So here it is—what works, what doesn’t, and how to take smarter care of your skin in your 40s and beyond.
Your Skin Is Changing—Here’s How to Keep Up
In your 40s, your skin is going through a shift. Slower cell turnover, less collagen, a little more dryness, and sensitivity that wasn’t there before. That doesn’t mean your skin is falling apart—it just means it needs a different kind of care: focused, intentional, and supportive.
What Works:
1. Treatments That Build, Not Break Down
Your skin needs help turning over, not getting stripped raw. That’s where gentle but effective professional treatments come in:
Geneo for hydration, oxygenation, and plumping.
JetPeel to deliver deep nourishment without irritation.
Dermaplaning to remove buildup and boost product absorption—so your serums actually get to do their job.
Microneedling to stimulate collagen and strengthen the skin from within—perfect for refining texture, minimizing fine lines, and giving your skin that firmer, smoother feel over time.
These treatments do the heavy lifting without the downtime (downtime is associated with microneedling).
2. A Retinol That Works with You
If retinol feels scary or has left you flaky in the past, don’t write it off completely. It’s still one of the best tools we have for softening lines and keeping texture smooth. We work with Santias Skincare, whose formulas are packed with active ingredients but designed to respect your barrier—not wreck it.
3. Barrier Repair is the Real Secret Sauce
You can’t glow if your barrier is shot. Dry, reactive skin is often a sign that the protective layer of your skin needs some love. Look for rich, nutrient-dense products that contain ceramides, fatty acids, and calming ingredients. This is also where in-treatment recovery masks and gentle enzyme exfoliants make a huge difference.
4. Antioxidants + SPF: Daily, No Matter What
We always say skincare is only as strong as its foundation. Start with a solid antioxidant serum in the morning (think Vitamin C), then seal the deal with SPF. One of our favorites for daily wear? MD SolarSciences Mineral SPF. It’s lightweight, blends beautifully, and doesn’t mess with your makeup—or your skin.
And What’s Just Hype?
"24k Gold Masks", Jade Rollers, and Anything That “Detoxes” Your Skin
Let’s keep it real... If "gold masks" and crystal rollers made a long-term difference, we wouldn’t be investing in science-backed skincare and treatments. Sure, they feel good—and that’s fine. But they’re not doing the deep work your skin needs at this stage.
Same goes for anything claiming to “detox” your pores. Your skin doesn’t need detoxing. It needs nourishment, hydration, and consistency.
Bottom Line?
In your 40s, your skin needs less guesswork and more strategy. No more chasing trends. No more hoarding half-used products that don’t do what they said they would. Now is the time to take a smarter approach—and to actually enjoy the skin you’re in.
You’re not behind. You don’t need a million things. You just need the right things, done consistently.
